01 | (Accidental) Video

[There's a sharp cracking sound as the video turns on, but the feed doesn't show a face or even a body. Instead, the picture starts off all black before the object that's blocking the screen pulls back: it's the heel of a boot, and it stomps down again a good few times before delivering a kick that sends the communicator skidding across the floor and into the far wall.

A mostly incoherent tirade, peppered with all kinds of colorful curses, accompanies this display.]

...my right to--?!...

...can pay with my sword through your stomach...

...damn interfering bastard--...

[Eventually, though, the fit of rage subsides, a hand reaches down to pick up the communicator, and a scowling face comes into view, only slightly obscured by the thin crack that's appeared across the top right corner of the screen. There's a few seconds of frowning, and then a blink of comprehension and he realizes that the device is on and capturing what he says. He doesn't know who's listening, but he has to assume that he can talk to the Powers That Be this way.]

Oi, whoever you are that's behind this idiot scheme: when I find you, I'm going to wring your damn neck like a dishrag and then cut you into pieces!!

[OOC: Start as you mean to go on? Kanda is in the dorms (room 101) having just seen the (helpful and informative!) orientation video. He's taking it rather well, all things considered. (I'm not sure what it says that this counts as taking it well.) Feel free to have characters hear the commotion coming from his room, if you'd prefer to meet him in full fit of pique run into him in person!]

[Celestia is prepared to give him a great deal of adjustment time. She herself finds humans and this whole situation to be terribly strange and alarming, but after you've been around as long as her you aren't quite as excitable. A little rudeness can be forgiven.]

[To answer his question, her horn shimmers with golden magic, as does the door -- which then obligingly moves, in and out.]

It isn't difficult.

Equestria has three types of ponies. The earth ponies have a unique tie with the land, and can tend and produce from it best. Pegasi have wings, and control the weather. Unicorns have horns, and thus magic. They control the seasons.

My own duty is to raise the sun each day, just as my sister raises the moon each night. Though I already have seen that this world does not function in the same manner.

[She glances up and away, thoughtful; her expression is unreadable.]

That's a hard question to answer. I can only be sure that it is not on this world, or in this solar system. The sun above us is not the one I know.

[Celestia seems a little sad at this -- which is a little understandable, considering losing the sun she knows is like losing a lifelong companion.]

[Celestia has all the patience in the world to allow him his thoughts. He may not be a pony, but the nuances of his expressions and behavior aren't so foreign that she can't pick up on at least a portion of what's going through his head.]

[She folds her wings slightly as she waits -- not entirely, but a little closer to turning the royal persona off, as it were. Which she can't really do entirely, but it varies by degrees.]

I have been given that a great deal of thought. When the device they gave us played its film, it stated that we would be returned to our world the moment we left it once our duty here was complete. I don't know if I believe that...

[She lifts a hoof to her chest in consideration.]

But I have a luxury that others here do not. Equestria will survive, even thrive, in my absence, though it may take my subjects a little while to realize that. I can safely allow myself time to consider this situation.

For now, I intend to gather as much information as I can, and observe.

We have no reason to trust the claim except that it is clearly possible. If we have been brought here, we can be returned; the time involved is no issue. But our captors have no reason to offer us the courtesy in truth.

I fear a magical duel with them will only risk others unnecessarily. [She says this as calmly as ever, but beneath it are hints of a core of steel. She not only finds no fear in the prospect of such combat, but doesn't even seem particularly dismissive of her chances.]

But I will gladly offer you any help that I can, if you find a way in which I can aid you.

That would be informative, and I believe you're right -- those records ought to exist. However, if you're not familiar with magic, I think I ought to tell you a little of it. Only powerful magic could have brought us here, and while I don't mean to disparage your skill with a sword, magic of that power provides several new options for addressing a blade at the throat.

Phrasing it that way, you're right. There's little meaningful different except versatility and scale. All I can do, then, is caution you to wait until your own efforts can do the most good. I would not see you needlessly endangered.

Unicorns are as varied in personality and temperament as anypony else, in my experience. If I'm any judge of such matters, you'd find each unicorn, or each pony, to be as unique and individual as any person of any other kind you know.

[Of all the ponies, her personality is probably the least 'human' anyway; she is a ruler, first and foremost, and perhaps only. It's been a very long time since a pony named Celestia was not a princess.]

[She's capable of reading conversational cues, though; she nods her head sort of as a farewell, then steps back to leave him to his peace. At least he seems calmer, though, and that's something.]
